Within the ICTD field, little attention has been devoted to non-digital technologies. These are ancient technologies and than replacing wood or stone with iron blades, their design has remained unchanged. They help produce food and income, and farmers use them with an intimate and sophisticated local knowledge of their soil and crops.

This social session at ICTforAg 2022 co-created by Michigan State University argued that the field can benefit from broadening its focus to include non-digital products, such as agricultural tools in particular, the “jembe” (Swahili for hoe).
